The area of glacial lakes around the world has increased by 51% in less than 30 years

An international study shows that glacial lakes have increased dramatically worldwide due to climate change. From 1990 to 2018, the number of glacial lakes increased by 53% and the total area by 51%.

During that time, global glacial lake volume increased by about 48 percent to 156.5 cubic kilometers, the study showed. Currently, there are 14,394 glacial lakes around the world, covering nearly 9,000 square kilometers.
