Foreign Ministry responds to US restrictions on Chinese diplomats’ activities in US: ‘Anti-China paranoia’

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying held a regular press conference on September 3. The US State Department issued a statement on September 2, requiring senior Chinese diplomats in the US to submit to the US State Department for approval to visit US universities, meet with local government officials and hold cultural events outside the us embassies and consulates with more than 50 people. What is China’s comment on that?

Hua chunying said that since October last year, the US State Department has continuously imposed restrictions on Chinese embassies and consulates in the US and their staff to perform normal duties in the US. Relevant measures seriously violate international law and basic norms governing international relations, and seriously interfere with China-Us relations and normal bilateral exchanges. In accordance with the Relevant provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the China-us Consular Treaty, China and the US should provide adequate facilities for each other’s diplomatic and consular personnel in their respective countries to perform their duties in accordance with the law.

Hua stressed that China always provides convenience for us embassy and consulate staff to conduct normal activities in China in accordance with laws and regulations. On the other hand, the US has twice required Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel in the US to report their activities in advance in October last year and In June this year. This time, the US has further asked for approval and even restricted their personal and social contacts with local US officials. These ACTS are totally contrary to international law and the basic norms governing international relations as well as the China-us Consular Treaty. They are groundless, unreasonable and illogical.

Hua chunying pointed out that this shows that the ANTI-China forces in the US have lost their rationality and confidence and are suffering from “anti-China paranoia”, which will continue to be strongly condemned and opposed by people of insight from all walks of life. China-us relations are important to both countries and the world. The two sides should keep communication channels open at all times. The Chinese embassy and consulates in the US will continue to maintain normal exchanges with all sectors of society in the US, and China will continue to support normal exchanges and cooperation between all sectors of society in the two countries. We urge the US State Department to immediately stop the erroneous decision, stop obstructing normal personnel exchanges between the two countries and stop undermining China-Us relations. China will make a proper and necessary response in light of the development of the situation.
