“The situation is not under control”, warns Professor Annane on RTL

Djillali Annane, head of the intensive care unit at the Raymond-Poincaré hospital in Garches, in Hauts-de-Seine, is one of those doctors who call for going even further in the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic, in particular by setting up a new confinement. The Scientific Council and the government seem less alarmist. “The situation is under control”, declared Prime Minister Jean Castex on Thursday January 14 at a press conference.

But for the professor working in the Paris region, the extension of the curfew to 6 p.m. to the entire metropolitan area is not sufficient. “The situation is not in fact under control”, he assures. “On leaving the second confinement, we were at around 8,000 contaminations per day. Today, for practically 8-10 days, we are more on average between 21,000 and 24,000 contaminations per day (…) We are not on a plateau, but in positive epidemic dynamics“, explains the doctor.

Keeping schools open, a “daring bet”

In reaction to the testimony of a florist, who wonders if it would not be better to “close everything” for three weeks to eradicate the virus, Djillali Annane believes that a new containment is necessary for return below 5,000 contaminations per day, otherwise “the screening and isolation strategy is not effective”.

For the professor, we must also go further in the vaccination campaign, and get closer to the British objectives, with 14-15 million people vaccinated by spring. “If we confine hard now for a few weeks, and we seize this moment to further accelerate the vaccination and change the priority audience (especially students), we can then probably open a lot of economic and cultural activities in the spring“, he declares.

According to Djillali Annane, maintaining the openness of schools is also a “daring bet”. “We know that the British variant is installed in France (…) And with this variant, there is a risk of an even greater acceleration of the epidemic dynamic, especially through schools“, concludes the doctor.
