Berlin / Schwerin (dpa) – The CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag is sharply critical of the foundation for circumventing US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The foundation initiated by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania threatens to restart the German-American Making relationships difficult. “We can’t use such provocations right now,” said Vice-parliamentary group leader Johann Wadephul of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Friday).
The structure and direction of the foundation could only be understood by the USA as a provocation, “especially given the strong role that Gazprom is supposed to have in the foundation,” criticized Wadephul.
As unacceptable as the US sanction threats against companies involved in the construction of the Baltic Sea pipeline are, a solution must and can be sought with the new US administration under President Joe Biden, said Wadephul. That is “the politically correct way, but not special ways with foundations”.
Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) had previously expressed skepticism about the establishment of the foundation, which was decided by the state parliament in Schwerin and, according to the state government, was not coordinated with the federal government. He hoped for an amicable settlement with Washington. It is important to talk to one another “to look for solutions that are acceptable to both sides”.
According to the Russian energy company Gazprom as the main investor, 94 percent of the pipeline has been completed.
The USA justifies its resistance to the gas pipeline and the announced sanctions against the companies involved in the construction with what it sees as a too great dependence of its European partners on Russian gas. Pipeline proponents accuse the USA of only wanting to sell their liquefied gas better in Europe.
The state government, led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), wants to use an environmental foundation aimed at the common good to help undo the sanctions threatened by the USA. Consideration is given to purchasing the components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline through a commercial enterprise of the foundation that is closely tied to Nord Stream 2.
The Schwerin government factions of the SPD and CDU – as well as the opposition left – approved the controversial construct. Environmental associations firmly reject the foundation as a sham.
