“Martinique remains in Phase 4 level 1 of the PSAGE * dengue fever: epidemic confirmed”, recalls Public Health France in its latest epidemic bulletin.
For three weeks, the epidemic surveillance indicators have been “stables […]but remain close to and above the seasonal threshold “.
For Santé Publique France, we must not let our guard down when it comes to vector control.
Despite this epidemic calm, it is necessary to remain vigilant and to continue adopting preventive measures (destruction of breeding sites, individual protection with repellents, use of mosquito nets, electric snowshoes) in order to promote this exit close to the epidemic phase.

Since the start of the epidemic in November 2019, it is estimated that nearly 32,650 clinically suggestive cases of dengue have consulted a general practitioner in town.
The last few weeks have therefore been less intense but according to the estimate of Public Health France, there are just under 90 cases per week.
For three weeks (2020-52 to 2021-01), the estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever remains close to but above the epidemic threshold (64 weekly cases) with, on average, nearly 87 estimated cases per week
Strong impacts at Diamant and Sainte-Luce
Among the 27 municipalities with at least one sentinel doctor, 19 report clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever and none has an incidence rate greater than 100 cases per 10,000 inhabitants.
“Sainte-Luce (79 per 10,000 inhabitants) and Le Diamant (57 cases) are the municipalities with the incidence rate
highest in Martinique, followed by the municipality of Basse-Pointe (26 cases)“, specifies the bulletin of Public Health France.
17 deaths in almost a year
Since February 2020, when surveillance began, until January 14, 2021, 47 serious cases of dengue fever have been hospitalized in an intensive care unit or intensive care unit.
“17 deaths of which 15 were classified directly related to dengue by the services of the Martinique University Hospital and 2 indirectly related to dengue”, states Public Health France.
The overwhelming majority of deaths recorded in Martinique occurred in the last quarter of 2020.
In total, of the 17 deaths that have occurred in hospitals and at home have been notified since the start of the epidemic, 14 have occurred since early September 2020.
Note that since the start of the epidemic, 2,018 admissions have taken place in the pediatric emergency department of the MFME.
Visits to the MFME emergency room have nevertheless sharply decreased since the end-of-year holidays (2020-52) with less than 10 visits recorded (Figure 5).
“This downward trend is to be confirmed over the next few weeks given the end of year celebrations”, points out Public Health France.
